I was reminded of the story of Bolli. One day, a man visited when he was just a puppy and walked into the living room. Bolli jumped onto his lap and greeted him enthusiastically. The man embraced him, sat on the floor, and said, 'You are such a beautiful and good puppy.' After that, the dog loved this man, displaying a noticeably different behavior towards him than other guests.
For example, Bolli always barks if the doorbell rings or someone knocks, but with this man, he didn't bark, or reacted at all. When the man went into the kitchen or the living room, Bolli immediately went to him, sat quietly by his feet, rested his head on his knee, and enjoyed being petted for a while. When the man asked, 'Are you there, buddy?' he would lie down at his feet and stay there while he talked. He didn't care about us; we simply didn't exist.
Sometimes I think about this now that the man has passed away, and the dog stands up and walks to the chair where the man sat in the living room when he visited. He looks at the chair for a moment, sniffs it, and then lies down as if he's lying at someone's feet. Does he sense his presence sometimes, even if it's just in spirit (but he's welcome if so)?
The man was an old farmer, Sigurjón from Foss in Svartárdal.
I don't have any pictures of them together, unfortunately. I didn't think about that. But oh, the friendship they had! Sometimes I've wondered if Bolli would be a reincarnated dog that he owned. It was so special.
